It is with deepest sorrow that I am informing you of the death of our alumnus, Steven Sotloff, ’02. At a time like this I am not sure that there are any words that can adequately describe the pain and sadness surrounding this terrible tragedy. We grieve with the Sotloff family and our collective hearts are with them during this difficult time.
Steven came to Kimball Union as a sophomore in 2000. He immediately embraced and welcomed the opportunities that Kimball Union offered him. He showed a keen interest in journalism early on, and revitalized the student newspaper. He also served as student council representative, admissions tour guide, and was an active member of the Kimball Union Fire Brigade. An accomplished athlete with varied interests, he played varsity football and rugby, and appeared in the school musical, Cabaret. As a result of his efforts with the school newspaper and his talent as a journalist, he was recognized with the prestigious Lawton Award for journalism at graduation.
As most of you know, Steven was a journalist during the 2011 Arab Spring and continued to shine a spotlight through his reporting on the world’s most challenging conflict zones. In the spring of 2011, I received an email from Steven while he was on the ground in Libya working for a news agency. He was under fire yet shared with me how Kimball Union had prepared him to reach beyond his grasp, to see the world through different lenses, and to commit to using what he learned at school to help others. Steven returned to campus in 2012 for the Biennial Global Fair where he shared his perspectives and experiences with our students and faculty.
Steven was a model of courage, character, and persistence. He was steadfast and resolute in pursuing his goal of making the world a better place. This commitment came at the greatest cost and sacrifice, his life. He was a gift not only to our school, but to the world. Steven lived a purposeful life and continues to be an inspiration to us all.
Plans to honor Steven will be announced at a later date.
